There are various waste disposal methods for waste PLA products, such as natural decomposition, composting, and incineration. Due to the low decomposition temperature of polylactic acid (about 230-260 °C, which is related to the crystallinity), the heat generated by the incineration of lactic acid is lower than that of traditional plastics, and the gases produced are mainly carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, acetaldehyde, etc. [7]. The main degradation form of polylactic acid is hydrolysis, which can be carried out at the same time as thermal degradation. The hydrolysis rate also has a great relationship with crystallinity. The acid generated by the hydrolysis of polylactic acid will catalyze its further hydrolysis, that is, the autocatalytic effect. By blending or copolymerizing with other polymers, the performance of polylactic acid can be improved, but its excellent degradability is also reduced.

*Safe and stable polylactic acid is not easy to be attacked and degraded by microorganisms, and it is not easy to degrade by enzymes like other polyesters, but there are still some enzymes such as pronase and bromelain that can promote its degradation.

*ECO and degradable - Gamma rays and electron beams also generate free radicals on the polylactic acid chain, resulting in radiation degradation.

*Environmentally friendly plastics - The radiation degradation efficiency is related to the residual end groups of PLA, and the radiation degradation efficiency also increases for PLA copolymers with aromatic rings.
